MPC Powered Thumbay Pharmacy Introduces Medication Counseling Center, Transforming Pharmacists into Educators and Patient Care Advocates

United Arab Emirates: Aimed at enhancing patient care through expert advice and support tailored to individual health needs, Thumbay Pharmacy in collaboration with Modern Pharmaceutical Company (MPC) and the College of Pharmacy at Gulf Medical University, has introduced medications counselling center at Thumbay University Hospital, Al Jurf branch. These services provide patients with the opportunity to consult with qualified clinical pharmacists who will offer guidance on medication management, health, wellness and lifestyle choices.

As part of the services offered at the center, the pharmacy has implemented several innovative patient centered care strategies that will significantly improve their health. Those visiting the medication counseling center will receive guidance on topics such as the impact of medications on skin health, the positive interactions between nutrition supplement and pharmaceuticals and lifestyle modifications to prevent side effects. Pharmacists will recommend appropriate products or supplements based on these discussions.

In the diverse demographic landscape of the UAE, counseling services are increasingly vital, particularly for patients with long-term health management needs, such as those with diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr. Samir Mahmoud, Director Patient and Customer Division, MPC, said, “Many individuals face challenges in understanding their medications, including how to take them correctly and the importance of adherence to prescribed regimens. Additionally, caregivers of sick or elderly family members often require guidance on proper medication administration to ensure timely and safe treatment. Recognizing these needs, medications counselling center is dedicated to plug the gap in healthcare by providing tailored services that maintain close contact with patients and closely monitor their conditions. This proactive approach not only enhances patient understanding but also promotes better health outcomes across the community, aligning with the UAE’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and quality. ”

Meanwhile, Professor Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of Gulf Medical University, emphasized the transitioning nature of the College of Pharmacy’s collaboration with Thumbay Pharmacy and MPC, stating that it shifts pharmacists from merely dispensing medication to becoming providers of comprehensive patient care. By developing our students alongside clinical pharmacists, we are creating a collaborative approach that enhances the advisory services available to patients before, during, and after their prescriptions. This partnership not only changes the dynamics of pharmacy education but also significantly improves the quality of care that patients receive in our community.”

Gulf Medical University Introduces the Master of Science in Neonatal Critical Care Nursing Program to Address UAE’s Specialized Healthcare Needs

The UAE’s 50th anniversary in 2021 highlighted healthcare as a central focus for national development. This emphasis led to the ‘UAE National Strategy for Nursing / Midwifery: A Roadmap to 2026,’ which aims to improve nursing education and training to address future workforce needs. Consequently, the Gulf Medical University’s Master of Science in Neonatal Critical Care Nursing program is designed to equip neonatal nurses with the highest level of expertise required for neonatal critical care settings, directly aligning with the UAE’s national strategy to enhance healthcare through advanced nursing education and meet future workforce demands.

It offers a comprehensive curriculum that blends advanced education with practical application, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to contribute to healthcare advancements through research, scholarship, and service. Understanding the needs of working professionals, the MSNCCN program provides flexible study options, including evening and weekend classes. This allows students to balance their professional responsibilities with their educational pursuits, enhancing their learning experience without compromising their practical application of knowledge.

The two-year, full-time program prepares nurses as specialized providers of healthcare to neonates and their families in acute care settings. The primary focus is to promote, maintain, supervise, and restore health, identify health risks, and manage acute illnesses in neonates. Graduates will be trained to function as educators, leaders, consultants, advocates, and change agents in the field of neonatal critical care. The curriculum includes hands-on experience through clinical rotations in leading Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) under the guidance of experienced preceptors. Emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration, the program prepares students to work effectively within healthcare teams comprising neonatologists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other specialists.

Professor Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing at the Gulf Medical University, stated, “Our program and curriculum are meticulously designed to advance skills and knowledge in neonatal critical care, addressing the pressing needs within our healthcare system. By creating a program that integrates practical and theoretical components, we aim to significantly elevate neonatal care standards in the UAE. This initiative reflects a thoughtful response to evolving healthcare challenges and represents a crucial step in nurturing neonatal nurses who are equipped to provide evidence-based care, lead interdisciplinary teams, and drive noteworthy research.”

The program is benchmarked against international standards and accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UAE. Applicants must meet all admission criteria, including a bachelor’s degree in nursing, at least one year of clinical experience in neonatal nursing, a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and evidence of English proficiency. Conditional admission is available for applicants with a CGPA of 2.5 to 2.9, provided they complete remedial courses.

Professor Hossam Hamdy, chancellor, Gulf Medical University, concluded, “We are committed to making world-class education in neonatal critical care accessible and attainable for talented individuals from nursing backgrounds. This initiative is vital and directly aligns with our mission to develop a diverse workforce of nurse leaders. Our students receive the best training in our largest chain of private academic hospitals and work in hospitals accredited by international organizations, benefiting from advanced technology and substantial resources invested in their development. By preparing nurses with both advanced education and practical skills, we are contributing to the overall improvement of neonatal health outcomes in the UAE and the overall region.”
