One Kilogram Lipoma Removed from the Back – Restoring Mobility

Thumbay Hospital Fujairah successfully treated a 49-year-old woman who had been struggling with a massive swelling on her upper back for the past five years. What began as a small, painless lump had gradually grown into a 20×20 cm giant intramuscular lipoma, eventually restricting her left arm movements and making daily tasks uncomfortable.

The case was managed by Dr. Narendra Reddy, Specialist in General and Laparoscopic Surgery, who explained that lipomas are benign tumors made of fat cells and are among the most common soft tissue growths in adults. While most lipomas remain small and harmless, some can reach extraordinary sizes, causing not just cosmetic concerns but also functional disabilities by exerting pressure on surrounding muscles and tissues.

Given the size and the patient’s symptoms, surgical removal was recommended. The patient underwent a successful procedure under general anesthesia, during which a 1-kilogram lipoma was carefully excised from within the back muscles without damage to adjacent nerves and vessels.

The outcome was highly rewarding: the patient regained full range of motion in her arm, experienced immediate relief from the heaviness and discomfort, and was discharged the very next day after a smooth recovery.

“This case highlights the importance of timely medical attention. Even though lipomas are benign, they should not be ignored when they grow unusually large or start interfering with quality of life,” said Dr. Narendra Reddy.
