Ajman: Marking a significant stride towards the future of healthcare education and research, Gulf Medical University (GMU), the region’s largest private health professions’ institute, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Meridian Healthcare. Spearheaded by Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of Gulf Medical University, and Prof. Ahmed ElSerafi, CEO of Meridian Health Care, this collaboration aims to strengthen GMU’s education system, scientific research, and community services through the seamless integration of artificial intelligence (AI).

Fujairah: Recognizing the critical importance of raising public awareness about high blood pressure and to mark World Hypertension Day, Thumbay Hospital Fujairah in collaboration with Emirates Red Crescent, organized an impactful event. The initiative included free consultations and checkups at corporate companies and an awareness session at the hospital. Patients who successfully managed their blood pressure through regular doctor visits, medication adherence, and following medical advice were acknowledged and rewarded. Attendees received various gifts, including blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring devices, and the hospital introduced a Special Hypertension Package to further support patients in managing their health.

There are severe health risks associated with hypertension such as heart attacks, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, paralysis, and memory loss. The normal BP level for adults should be under 140/90 mm Hg, while for individuals with diabetes, it should be closer to 130/80 mm Hg to mitigate additional cardiovascular risks.”

Dr. Sathyanarayanan, in addition, highlighted the importance of preventive measures, urging everyone to adopt a healthy lifestyle by exercising daily, avoiding smoking, staying hydrated, regularly checking blood pressure, reducing salt intake and managing stress. Gulf Medical University’s Annual Research Day Decodes Breakthroughs in Oncology Therapies and AI-Based Brain Imaging

In an effort to create a dynamic platform for recognizing outstanding breakthroughs in health professions’ research, the Annual GMU Research Day was held on 2nd and 3rd May 2024 at the Gulf Medical University campus in Al Jurf, Ajman. Organized by the Thumbay Research Institute for Precision Medicine (TRIPM) in collaboration with the six colleges at Gulf Medical University (GMU), this event served as a platform to showcase research from international medical institutes, as well as the colleges of GMU, and clinical research at Thumbay Healthcare. A total of 28 research projects were presented by faculty members, with a whopping number of 122 posters displayed and presented by students involved in research projects.

The event featured a wide array of research topics, reflecting the institution’s multidisciplinary approach to research. Highlights included studies on new combined therapies for Pancreatic Cancer, the complexity of tumor microenvironment and its targeting, and brain image analysis in cognitive disorders using AI, presented by faculty from global medical education institutions. Additionally, research on breast, lung cancer, among others further demonstrated the breadth of research undertaken by both faculty and students at GMU.

Dr. Limani added, “the work and vision of the Chancellor, Research Vice Chancellor, Deans, and the top-notch faculty members of Gulf Medical University really showcased the outstanding caliber of research and training happening here. The focus on education, research, and clinical work is what sets the stage for preparing successful healthcare professionals. What is really remarkable is the swift progress made in research within the PhD program launched at GMU just six years back. The depth of basic science research, in laboratories and using the zebrafish animal model, is a reflection of GMU’s commitment to expanding knowledge. The students have been provided with a nurturing environment, so that they can pursue research alongside their studies. This collaborative culture, involving both local and global partners, not only enhances students’ research  and education skills but also enriches their clinical practice.”

Through engaging talks and compelling poster presentations, the Research Day illuminated the breadth of research and scholarly endeavors across various disciplines at GMU. The conference, attended by 800 participants both physically and online, highlighted the pivotal role of technology and data science in shaping the future of healthcare education and practice.

Students and staff gathered excitedly to enjoy various activities, food stalls, and entertainment. With students from 102 different countries taking part, the event shows GMU’s commitment to diversity and togetherness. Through music, dance, and delicious food from around the world, Global Day celebrates the many cultures that make up the university’s community.

Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the Chancellor of GMU was the chief guest of GMU Global Day 2024. Accompanied by the Vice Chancellors and Deans, the Chancellor toured the exhibition where students had showcased the food and costumes, as well as other exhibits relevant to their culture and history. A total of 25 country pavilions displaying glimpses from the culture and heritage of various countries and serving traditional food were set up at the University ground. Pavilions were set up by students of UAE, other Middle East Countries, as well as Asian and African countries.

More than 1000 attendees, including students, staff, families, and friends of the University, congregated at the University grounds to partake in the lively Global Day celebrations. As part of the festivities, students from six colleges vied for the esteemed title of the ‘Best Stall.’ Judges, comprising three faculty members, evaluated the stalls based on their creativity, presentation, and adherence to the event’s theme. The winners were chosen based on a comprehensive assessment, including online voting by the student community, taking into account the quality of their stall presentations and offerings- showcasing the diverse talents of the GMU community.
