Dr. Thumbay Moideen to receive Honorary Doctorate from Mangalore University

Fujairah: Recognizing the critical importance of raising public awareness about high blood pressure and to mark World Hypertension Day, Thumbay Hospital Fujairah in collaboration with Emirates Red Crescent, organized an impactful event. The initiative included free consultations and checkups at corporate companies and an awareness session at the hospital. Patients who successfully managed their blood pressure through regular doctor visits, medication adherence, and following medical advice were acknowledged and rewarded. Attendees received various gifts, including blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring devices, and the hospital introduced a Special Hypertension Package to further support patients in managing their health.

During the event, Dr. C.R. The normal BP level for adults should be under 140/90 mm Hg, while for individuals with diabetes, it should be closer to 130/80 mm Hg to mitigate additional cardiovascular risks.”

Gulf Medical University’s Annual Research Day Decodes Breakthroughs in Oncology Therapies and AI-Based Brain Imaging

In an effort to create a dynamic platform for recognizing outstanding breakthroughs in health professions’ research, the Annual GMU Research Day was held on 2^nd and 3^rd May 2024 at the Gulf Medical University campus in Al Jurf, Ajman. Organized by the Thumbay Research Institute for Precision Medicine (TRIPM) in collaboration with the six colleges at Gulf Medical University (GMU), this event served as a platform to showcase research from international medical institutes, as well as the colleges of GMU, and clinical research at Thumbay Healthcare. A total of 28 research projects were presented by faculty members, with a whopping number of 122 posters displayed and presented by students involved in research projects.

The event featured a wide array of research topics, reflecting the institution’s multidisciplinary approach to research. Highlights included studies on new combined therapies for Pancreatic Cancer, the complexity of tumor microenvironment and its targeting, and brain image analysis in cognitive disorders using AI, presented by faculty from global medical education institutions. Additionally, research on breast, lung cancer, among others further demonstrated the breadth of research undertaken by both faculty and students at GMU.

“Attending the Research Day was impressive,” said Dr. Perparim Limani, Department of Surgery and Transplantation, University Hospital Zurich following his keynote presentation. Dr. Limani added, “the work and vision of the Chancellor, Research Vice Chancellor, Deans, and the top-notch faculty members of Gulf Medical University really showcased the outstanding caliber of research and training happening here. The focus on education, research, and clinical work is what sets the stage for preparing successful healthcare professionals. What is really remarkable is the swift progress made in research within the PhD program launched at GMU just six years back. The depth of basic science research, in laboratories and using the zebrafish animal model, is a reflection of GMU’s commitment to expanding knowledge. The students have been provided with a nurturing environment, so that they can pursue research alongside their studies. This collaborative culture, involving both local and global partners, not only enhances students’ research and education skills but also enriches their clinical practice.”

Thumbay Institute of AI Healthcare Concludes Second Conference with 800 Participants, Spotlighting New Tech, Curriculum Advancement & and Youth Inclusion in Training

Ajman, UAE: Thumbay Institute of AI in Healthcare marked a historic milestone with the successful conclusion of the Second International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, organized by students of GMU’s AI club under the guidance of faculty. The conference, attended by 800 participants both physically and online, highlighted the pivotal role of technology and data science in shaping the future of healthcare education and practice.

As healthcare continues to evolve, Gulf Medical University announced that it is developing a curriculum aimed at equipping health professionals with the necessary skills to utilize the ever-expanding landscape of technology. Driven by advancements in AI, big data analysis, and cybersecurity, the curriculum seeks to seamlessly integrate these elements into medical education, preparing students across all programs and colleges for a future where technology is present in patient care.

“With the transition from pen and paper to computers, and now to the era of evidence-based medicine, technology has become indispensable in decision-making processes,” said Professor Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of Gulf Medical University in his keynote address. “Collaboration between technologists, healthcare practitioners, policymakers, and patients is critical in the integration of AI into healthcare. In order to ensure that AI solutions address actual healthcare demands, interdisciplinary alliances cultivate an environment that supports innovation. This conference serves as a platform to raise awareness among health professionals and health professional students about the transformative potential of technology in enhancing patient care and treatment outcomes.”

The conference featured 15 speakers who delved into topics such as the application of AI in medicine, the importance of cybersecurity in AI-driven healthcare, and the use of pattern and image-based algorithms for cancer detection. These discussions emphasized the critical need for health professionals to adapt to a technology-driven environment, where AI and data science play integral roles in decision-making processes.

Ajman: Students and faculty of Anesthesia Technology Department of College of Health Sciences, Gulf Medical University, conducted a two-day community awareness program on World Sleep Day on 14^th and 15^th March 2024 on the occasion of World Sleep Day at Thumbay University Hospital as part of their ongoing commitment to community engagement.

This annual event, recognized worldwide by the World Sleep Society, marks the third consecutive year that Anesthesia Technology students has successfully organized the initiative in partnership with Thumbay University Hospital, their teaching hospital, drawing huge number of students eager to participate and raise awareness about the importance of healthy sleep habits.

World Sleep Day serves as an important platform to raise awareness about the significance of sleep and its impact on overall health and well-being. Celebrated annually under a specific theme, this year’s focus is on ‘Sleep Equity for Global Health.’ It highlights the need to provide every individual with access to quality sleep, irrespective of their circumstances, emphasizing the importance of addressing disparities and creating a world where everyone can enjoy the benefits of optimal sleep health.

Through this initiative, GMU’s Anesthesia Technology Department aims to educate the patients and the community about the detrimental effects of sleep disorders. “We are proud to continue our tradition of organizing the World Sleep Day celebration in collaboration with Thumbay University Hospital,” said Praveen Kumar K., Dean, College of Health Sciences, expressing his enthusiasm for the initiative. “Our students played a crucial role in in educating the visitors and patients of Thumbay University Hospital about health issues through informative sessions, interactive displays, and engaging conversations, thus, promoting well-being within the local community through their knowledge and passion,” he added.

Gulf Medical University’s Annual Global Day Hosts the Largest Fusion of Cultures, Featuring 25 Country Pavilions and Over 1000 Attendees

Gulf Medical University (GMU), UAE’s premier medical institution, hosted its Annual Global Day celebration at Friday, lighting up the Al Jurf campus with colorful neon lights and welcoming everyone to join the fun. Students and staff gathered excitedly to enjoy various activities, food stalls, and entertainment. With students from 102 different countries taking part, the event shows GMU’s commitment to diversity and togetherness. Through music, dance, and delicious food from around the world, Global Day celebrates the many cultures that make up the university’s community.

Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the Chancellor of GMU was the chief guest of GMU Global Day 2024. Accompanied by the Vice Chancellors and Deans, the Chancellor toured the exhibition where students had showcased the food and costumes, as well as other exhibits relevant to their culture and history. A total of 25 country pavilions displaying glimpses from the culture and heritage of various countries and serving traditional food were set up at the University ground. Pavilions were set up by students of UAE, other Middle East Countries, as well as Asian and African countries.

More than 1000 attendees, including students, staff, families, and friends of the University, congregated at the University grounds to partake in the lively Global Day celebrations. As part of the festivities, students from six colleges vied for the esteemed title of the ‘Best Stall.’ Judges, comprising three faculty members, evaluated the stalls based on their creativity, presentation, and adherence to the event’s theme. The winners were chosen based on a comprehensive assessment, including online voting by the student community, taking into account the quality of their stall presentations and offerings- showcasing the diverse talents of the GMU community.

Commending the dedication of the students, Prof. Hossam Hamdy expressed his appreciation for their efforts in making the annual Global Day a success. He highlighted the significance of the event in uniting GMU’s students and staff, emphasizing the university’s commitment to embracing diversity through the theme of ‘Unity in Diversity’.
